In a bid to promote stories as a primary tool for learning and teaching among students, the Assam police have come up with an initiative which is a book of short stories for children.
The book named The Little Sentinels is the English version of a previous Assamese version and is now available on the Assam Police website. The foreword has been written by former Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia. Eleven short stories have been featured in the book.
Sharing the link, he tweeted, “Stories are a primary tool for learning and teaching. After an overwhelming response to our Assamese collection of short stories for children, it is English translation,’The Little Sentinels’ is now available on the Assam Police website.”
The book is compiled and edited by Dr Dinesh Chandra Goswami and published by Rajib Saikia. Illustrations are done by Utpal Talukdar and cover design is done by Nripen Barman.
Humphrey alumnus, Saikia was conferred the prestigious literary award, the 2015 Sahitya Akademi award, for his collection of short stories, Akakhor Sobi Aaru Anyanya Galpa (Picture of the Sky and Other Tales)’ written in his native Assamese language.
He is a Fulbright scholar in community leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, winner of several literary, and the recipient of a doctorate in crime and development from Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. He was also awarded the President’s police medal twice for his outstanding contribution to policing.
Saikia is also the brainchild of ‘Project Prahari, community development project to fight against social prejudices, economic isolation, and militancy in remote tribal villages. He has filed nominations for the president seat of Asam Sahitya Sabha.
Saikia retired on November 30th, 2019 as the DGP of Assam.
