Guwahati, February 14, 2019
Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal on February 14, 2019, refused to play her singles pre-quarterfinal match at the Senior National Badminton Championship citing “poor playing surface” of the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium in Guwahati.
The former who had suffered a shin injury late last year was about to play up against Shruti Mundada.
Prior to the mixed-doubles pre-quarterfinals match of the 83rd Senior National Badminton Championship, Nehwal has been complaining about the badminton courts making it clear that she did not want to risk her game as the All England Championship is around the corner.
Soon after her complaint, the Assam Badminton Association sprung into action to improve the surface of the court. Meanwhile, the match has been rescheduled for the evening.
Also, the Badminton Association of India are sorting out the issue and have convinced her that the issue will be solved by evening.
