The Guwahati Police on August 30th, 2019 shared a video on their social media handles–Facebook and Twitter on the possible skimming of ATM machines in the city and also issued an advisory on how a person should detect the same and report it to the concerned officials.
Urging the public to be aware of ATM frauds, the force admitted that they had recently unearthed a Modus Operandi on Debit/Credit Card skimming devices used in ATM Booths to gather Debit/Credit Card credentials of un-suspecting card users in the city.
Appealing the public to be extra vigilant while transacting money at the ATM booths, the Guwahati police in their 1.41 min video wrote– ‘Beware of ATM Frauds. ATM Skimmer devices may be attached to any ATM machine from where you are withdrawing your hard-earned money. Please check for your external or suspicious device attaché din ATM machine while withdrawing money from ATM booths’.
The advisory came after 127 ATM hacking cases were registered in different police stations in Guwahati within 48 hours.
As per information available, the victims alleged that after a transaction from an ATM machine, they received messages in their mobile phones saying that money had been withdrawn from their accounts without withdrawing any money.
