Guwahati, March 10, 2019
The Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway will install escalators and lifts in different stations including Guwahati Railway Station within next year to ensure smooth movement of passengers.
Mangaldai MP Ramen Deka inaugurated two escalators and one lift at the Guwahati Railway Station on March 9th, 2019. The NF Railway officials informed that 29 more escalators and 36 more lifts are coming up within next year.
Deka also laid foundation stones for six more escalators at the Guwahati Railway Station which will be operational from next year.
The foundation stones for two escalators were laid at the Lumding Railway Station by local MLA Sibu Mishra. Rangia, Lumding, New Tinsukia and Lumding will get two new escalators each by 2020. Two escalators in Agartala and one in Dimapur will also be installed by next year.
The first lift was installed in New Tinsukia Railway Station in September 2018. At present, Guwahati, Kathiar and New Coochbehar Railway Stations have one lift each and New Jalpaiguri has two lifts.
The lifts and escalators will facilitate smooth movement of passengers, including old and physically-challenged people. The Railway aims to install about 3,000 escalators and 1,000 lifts at all major urban and suburban stations across the country. All those stations which have 25,000 footfalls or more a year are selected for such installations.
The NF Railway is one of the 17 railway zones in India. Headquartered in Maligaon, Guwahati in the state of Assam, it is responsible for rail operations in the entire Northeast and parts of West Bengal and Bihar.
