NFHS Report: 7% Women, 25% Men Drink Alcohol in Assam; Highest in Arunachal Pradesh

Guwahati: Around an average 25 % of men and 7% of women above 15 years in the state drink alcohol in Assam, said the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS) report.

As per the report, only 1% of women in India drink alcohol compared with 22% of men. The NFHS-5 survey has been conducted in around 6.37 lakh sample households in 707 districts in 28 states and eight Union Territories, covering 7, 24,115 women and 1, 01,839 men to provide disaggregated estimates up to district level.

“In Assam, 2.5% women in urban areas and 8.2 % women in rural areas (above 15 years) were found to be drinking alcohol. Similarly, 21.2% men in rural and 26% in urban areas drink alcohol in Assam,” the report said.

However, the report revealed that the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh has the highest alcohol consumption rate in the entire country. Alcohol use among women age 15 and over was found to be highest in Arunachal Pradesh (24%) and Sikkim (16%). Alcohol use among men was also highest in Arunachal Pradesh (53%) followed by Sikkim (40%).

Amongst the northeastern states, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland recorded the lowest percentage (0.9%) of women who drink alcohol. For men, the lowest rate of alcohol consumption was recorded in Mizoram (23.7%) and Nagaland (23.9%).

The report added that only 1.5% women and 32.4% men in Meghalaya were found to be drinking alcohol whereas 6.3% women and 33% men were drinking in Tripura.

In the national prospective, among the women who consume alcohol, 17 per cent drink almost every day and 37 per cent about once a week. Among the men who drink alcohol, 15 per cent drink alcohol almost every day, 43 per cent about once a week and 42 per cent less than once a week, the report said.
