NITI Aayog Member Backs Internet Ban In J&K, Says Internet Is Used To Watch ‘Dirty Movies’

The NITI Aayog members also said that the blockade did not have any “economic loss" to the country

NITI Aayog member, Vijay Kumar Saraswat defending the internet ban in Kashmir Valley made a controversial statement and said that “the internet is used to watch dirty movies in the valley”.

He further went on to back the internet restrictions and said that it was done for the abrogation of Article 370 last year and that the blockade did not have any “economic loss” to the country.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the annual convocation at Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT) in Gujarat on Saturday.

“There are elements which could misuse information and cause unrest. Also, politicians want to go to Kashmir to re-create the protests happening in Delhi to Kashmir. They use social media as a weapon and fuel these agitations. How does it make a difference of not having internet there and what would you watch besides dirty movies” he was quoted as saying.

It may be mentioned that after five months of the communications clampdown, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) administration on the evening of January 14th, 2020 allowed mobile Internet in parts of Jammu region and broadband in hotels, travel companies and hospitals but only on “white-listed” websites.

The development came after the Apex Court on January 10th, 2020 said that the indefinite internet shutdown in J&K is an abuse of power and directed the administration to review all restrictive orders in place since the Centre ended special status to the former state in August 2019.

Saraswat is an Indian scientist who formerly served as the Director-General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Indian Minister of Defence.
