No decision yet on NRC in Tripura, clarifies Centre

Agartala, October 6: The Centre has not taken any decision to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Tripura – an exercise to identify illegal immigrants.

A delegation of the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT), led by its president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl, met Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday.

A statement issued by the Home Ministry reads: “The Home Minister met a delegation of the INPT on October 4. However, no assurance was given by the Home Minister regarding the implementation of the NRC in Tripura.”

The Ministry also dismissed news reports on on the likely implementation of the NRC in Tripura as “absolutely incorrect and mischievous”.

Hrangkhawl said, “He (Rajnath Singh) did not specifically say that the NRC will be taken up in Tripura after Assam. But he did not deny also.”
