No water for school children in Assam: Right body jumps into rescue

Scarcity of potable water caused enormous hardship to the small children of two schools in Silchar

GUWAHATI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) jumped into the rescue of several school children from Silchar in Assam after the two schools were left out of water due to a disruption in the water supply.

The right body intervened after it took cognizance of two separate complaints against the Public Health Department, Silchar Division No II, and Lakhipur Sub-division regarding disruption of potable water supply to 360 Ram Sundar Balika Vidyalaya, Chandrapur and 1042 Chandrapur LP School after disconnecting water supply from the Chandrapur 2nd  Part Water Supply Scheme.

Such scarcity of potable water caused enormous hardship to the small children of the said schools.

The Commission took cognizance into the matter and issued notices to the Executive Engineer, PHE, Silchar Division II and Assistant Executive Engineer, Lakhipur PHE Sub-division.

“Now, it is reported by the PHE, Silchar Division II that alternative connections were provided to the water tank at 360 Ram Sundar Balika Vidyalaya from nearby Chandrapur P-II  water supply scheme. Accordingly, the water supply is now regular and in order and the water supply to the other school has also become regular, “AHRC said in a statement.
