Northeast Students Boycott Classes Over CAA

The students’ fraternity of six universities of Assam are observing a "total shutdown" today

The Students’ Union of at least nine universities and colleges across the Northeast have called for a total shutdown on January 22nd, 2020 over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The students’ fraternity of six universities of Assam, one each of Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland have called for a “shutdown” today.

Taking part in the protest the Cotton University Students Union(CUSU) called for a mass protest from 10 am-5 pm inside the campus. Several students stood in front of Gauhati University and shouted slogans against the amended Act. Slogans like “Joi Aai Axom”, “Will not accept CAA” rent the air.

The students expressed their resentment for CAA by burning copies of the legislation.

It may be mentioned that a three-judge bench of Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, Justice S Abdul Nazeer and Justice Sanjiv Khanna will hear all the pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA).

A total number of 75 petitions challenging the CAA was filed in the apex court. The petitions under consideration include Congress leader Jairam Ramesh’s plea challenging the constitutionality of the citizenship law.
