Agartala, April 20, 2019

The Khuwai police have served a notice to the Tripura Congress president and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Deb Burman in connection with a suo motto case registered against him for slapping a supporter of the ruling BJP’s junior partner IPFT inside a police station.

As per the police, Burman has been charged under Sections 323, 352, 447 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code(IPC). He was asked to appear before the investigating officer of the Khuwai Police Station. An FIR was filed against Burman for slapping Mintu Debbarma (30), a supporter of the IPFT inside the Khowai police station on April 18th, 2019.

It may be mentioned that Mintu was arrested by the police for allegedly attacking Burman’s sister Pragya Dev Burman’s convoy in East Tripura Lok Sabha constituency. She has been fielded by the Congress from the East Tripura Lok Sabha constituency.

Post the incident, polling in Tripura East tribal reserve constituency has been rescheduled by the Election Commission from April 18th to April 23rd. Meanwhile, the police have also arrested three other tribal youths for their alleged involvement in the attack on Congress candidate’s convoy in Khuwai.

Burman landed in a controversy after a video where he was seen slapping a youth inside Khowai police station in Tripura went viral on social media platforms. “It is a very unfortunate incident. The man hit my sister with a brick and she almost died. I am ready for any action against me but I stand by what I did as a brother and a concerned citizen of Tripura,” he had said earlier.
