NRC seva kendra shut at Tamulpur; Applicants apprehensive of exclusion

Tamulpur, December 6: Only nine days left for the filing of claims and objections in the National Registrar of Citizens (NRC), the last window to be included in the final list and a Seva Kendra in Baksa has taken a deserted look in these crucial final days; all because of the absence of officials.

In Kumarikata village under Tamulpur subdivision, about 30 km from the BTC district headquarters Mushalpur, an NRC seva kendra, the last resort for those who were excluded from the final draft, has been found shut more tha often by the applicants.

“We come with the applications and the necessary documents and often, we have to return back because the seva kendra is closed. We are now apprehensive if we can file our applications at all,” one of the applicants said.

To weed out foreigners from the state, the NRC of 1951 is being updated based on various admissible documents, the final draft of which was released on July 30. Over 40 lakh persons were excluded in the draft.

“This is very serious. our lives are at stake and the officials are being negligent,” another said.

People excluded from the final list may suffer stripping out of citizenship.
