Guwahati, July 4: Ahead of the publication of the second draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) on July 30, as per the direction of the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Home Affairs will hold a review meeting in New Delhi on various issues related to the publishing of an error-free NRC draft.
The meeting will be attended by Assam chief secretary T Y Das, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia, Principal Secretary of Home LS Changsan, NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba along with several other officials.
To maintain law and order in the state in the run-up to the publication of the draft NRC, interim security measures have been implemented to maintain a strict vigil across Assam, as per reports.
Additional security forces have been deployed in the sensitive areas of the state. The Assam government has asked the Centre to ensure deployment of extra companies of additional forces in Assam.
On Monday, the Supreme Court had asked the Assam Chief Secretary and DGP to review the security of Prateek Hajela, state coordinator for NRC, and file ‘Action Taken Report’ in the coming seven days.
It may be mentioned that a team of senior government of Assam officers, led by Das and Saikia, visited Cachar on Monday and took stock of the emerging law and order and internal security situation of the districts of Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Dima Hasao. This was the fifth meeting by the high powered team before publication of draft NRC.
The first draft NRC was published on December 31, 2017, which had names of 1.9 crore of 3.29 crore applicants
