Number Of Hindu Bengalis Excluded From NRC To Be Made Public Soon: Himanta

The Minister urged for a fresh version of NRC along with the rest of the country

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on November 28th, 2019 said that the state government will make public the district-wise data of the number of Hindu Bengalis excluded from the final National Register of Citizens(NRC) list during the on-going session of the Assam Assembly.

It may be mentioned that the winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly kick-started on November 28th, 2019. The first day of the session witnessed noisy scenes as the opposition parties staged a walkout protest over scrapping of the NRC and the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill(CAB).

The Minister said that the enactment of legislation of CAB is important so that the state assembly constituencies do not go the hands of “other people”. He also urged for a fresh version of NRC along with the rest of the country as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India(CAG) has found “huge anomalies” in the NRC exercise.

The Bill seeks to grant Indian citizenship to the people belonging to the Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis who have become the victims of religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan and entered India on or before December 31st, 2014.

Meanwhile, ahead of Home Minister Amit Shah’s consultative meeting with Northeast politicos and organizations, Congress MPs from the Northeast and Naga People’s Front (NPF) MPs staged protest in the Parliament premises against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

It may be mentioned that if CAB is passed, the Hindu Bengalis excluded from the Assam NRC would be eligible for citizenship if they declare themselves as religious persecution from Bangladesh. On the other hand, the Bengali Muslims would be treated as ‘foreigners’.
