On-Duty Night Guard Of NRC Seva Kendra Attacked In Sivasagar

With less than a week left for the publication of the final draft of National Register of Citizens(NRC), a group of unidentified miscreants allegedly attacked an on-duty night guard deployed at the NRC Seva Kendra(NSK) in the Sivasagar town of Assam on August 26th, 2019.

As per reports, a group of masked men came charging towards the night guard, identified as Atul Bora, physically assaulted him at the NSK located at the Old District Library in KPM Chariali of Sivasagar town and managed to flee from the spot. Bora who sustained serious injuries was immediately rushed to the Joysagar Civil Hospital in a critical condition.

The locals suspected that the personnel might be attacked by the organizers of a fun-fair which was underway at the said old library premise. A local police team who reached the spot found alcohol bottles littered around the ground.

The Supreme Court on August 14th, 2019 directed the NRC authorities to publish the list of exclusions on August 31st, 2019 only online and it shall be family-wise.

Ahead of the publication of the NRC, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has urged people of Assam to stay calm and not to panic. On August 13th, 2019, Sonowal met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and discussed a host of issues concerning the law and order in the state in the run up to the publication of the final NRC and post the publication.

It may be mentioned that a partial draft of the NRC was released on the midnight of December 31st, 2017 and subsequently on July 30th, 2018, the complete draft NRC was released leading to a situation of unrest in the state. A total of 28,983,677 persons were found eligible out of 32,991,384 applicants in the final draft of the NRC. The NRC authorities on June 26th, 2019 published an additional draft exclusion list consisting of 1,02,462 persons.
