On R-Day, Cong Buys Copy Of Constitution From Amazon, Gifts To Modi

Congress has time and again accused Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of "dividing the name in the name of religion"

O the occasion of the 71st Republic Day, the Congress took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi by urging him to ‘read the Constitution’.

Taking to Twitter, the Congress shared a picture of its virtual Amazon cart with the copy of The Indian Constitution for the Prime Minister, keeping the payment method, ‘pay on delivery’.

Posting the receipt of the order on the microblogging site, which will be shipped to Modi office in E Block of the Central Secretariat, the Congress added a message to the gift. “Dear PM, The Constitution is reaching you soon. When you get time off from dividing the country, please do read it. Regards, Congress.”

The Congress party’s ‘gift’ comes at the time when the country is facing outrage and nation-wide demonstrations against the controversial amended Citizenship Act (CAA) and proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

Congress has time and again accused Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of “dividing the name in the name of religion”. On the other hand, Modi and other BJP leaders blamed the Congress for spreading “rumours” against CAA, NRC and NPR.

On January 26th, 2020, the official Twitter handle of the Congress several posts related to the Constitution in protest against the CAA.

“A lesson the BJP has failed to understand is that all persons no matter creed, caste or gender are guaranteed equality before the law under Article 14 of the Constitution. It is this article that is completely violated by the govt’s Citizenship Amendment Act,” the party tweeted.

The Congress shared excerpts from the Constitution highlighting the rights to equality, protection against discrimination and freedom of peaceful assembly. In another tweet, Congress wrote, “The violent clampdown on peaceful protests, the systematic breakdown & manipulation of the media & the undemocratic arrest or detention of persons criticising the govt are all symptomatic of BJP’s unconstitutional behaviour.”

The CAA grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who came to India on or before December 31st, 2014.

Massive protests broke out in the country soon after the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill in both the houses of the parliament. Those protesting against the law say that the Act is discriminatory and creates a divide on the basis of religion.
