Guwahati, June 3, 2019

With a mission to ‘Go Green’ and enter the Guinness World Records book, Meghalaya has geared up to conduct a massive plantation drive on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5th, 2019. 1 million pits have been dug up so far until the filing of this report.

The Meghalaya Government aims to plant over 1 million saplings on June 5th, 2019 under the campaign ‘One Citizen One Tree‘. At the time of filing this report, as many as 500 villages have registered to participate in the campaign.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has urged people to come out in large numbers so as to make this initiative a great success. In a video message, Sangma said, “The concept is very simple, we are not planting a tree rather we are adopting a tree. Every individual requires 19 cubic feet of oxygen per day. One tree produces enough oxygen for a family of four. If you plant a tree, you are ensuring your oxygen supply is taken care of.”

“As a Government, we have decided to plant one million trees on the 5th of June and for this, we urge all citizens to partner with us in a programme called ‘One Citizen One Tree’,” the Chief Minister added.

The mass plantation drive at the villages will take place with the help of the Meghalaya Forest Department. The Meghalaya Government will be giving out 2000 free saplings for the residents of Shillong who wish to participate in the plantation drive at the Secretariat Parking lot from 9 am onwards on June 5th, 2019.

A selfie booth will also be set up for the participants. Certificates will be handed over to all the participants. As part of the campaign, a training programme was also conducted on Tree Plantation at Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills on June 4th, 2019.

‘Water Man’ of India and noted water conservationist and winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Award and the Stockholm Water Prize Rajendra Singh will also join Meghalaya on June 5th, 2019.
