Only 3 B’deshis Among 28 Who Died In Assam Detention Camps

The construction of India’s first exclusive detention centre is underway in Matia town of Goalpara district

Only three among the 28 detenues who died of various illnesses so far at the detention camps in Assam had their addresses in neighbouring country Bangladesh. This was informed by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary to a query by AGP MLA Utpal Dutta on November 30th, 2019 during the ongoing Assam Assembly winter session.

The three persons –  Nagen Das, Basudev Biswas and Dulal Miya – had given their addresses in Bangladesh, while the recorded addresses of the remaining 25 were different districts of Assam, Patowary informed.

Last month, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai had informed the Rajya Sabha that 28 detenues had died in detention centres set up in Assam or the hospitals they were referred to between 2016 beginning and October 10th, 2019. Rai also informed that as on November 22nd, 2019, 988 “foreigners” have been lodged in six detention centres in Assam.

Patowary also stated that a proposal has been sent to the Centre to set up more detention centers in addition to the existing ones. The construction of India’s first exclusive detention centre is underway in Matia town of Goalpara district.

The detention centre can house 3,000 people in it at once. Currently, detainees are kept in detention centres run by district jails. The size of the new detention centre is similar to sizes of seven soccer fields. It is built over an area of 2.5 hectares.

Rai informed that at present there are 317 inmates are in Tezpur detention centre, 142 in Kokrajhar, 222 in Goalpara, 195 in Jorhat, 72 in Silchar and 40 in Dibrugarh.
