South Korean satire Parasite swept the Oscars 2020 last evening by taking home four big prizes. The 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller film became the first-ever non-English language film that won the best picture in 92 years of Oscars history.
The film directed by also won the award for best international feature, best director and best original screenplay. The movie had six nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards.
With this Parasite has been able to beat Joker, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Marriage Story, Little Women, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Jojo Rabbit.
Earlier 11 non-English movies were nominated for Best Picture including Roma, Amour, Babel, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
“It is hard to believe, it is such a great honour. It feels like a dream come true. Thank you Academy” Bong was quoted as saying.
The movie stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, and Park So-dam, and follows the members of a poor household who scheme to become employed by a wealthy family by infiltrating the household and posing as unrelated, highly qualified individuals.
The film was premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it became the first Korean film to win the Palme d’Or and the first to win with a unanimous vote since 2013’s ‘Blue Is the Warmest Colour’.
