The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha (BGP) on August 31st, 2019, claimed that the final National Register of Citizens (NRC), that was released today, excluded more than one lakh people belonging to the community.

The BGP president Nityananda Upadhyay said, “The number of rejected bonafide Indian citizens belonging to Gorkha community is expected to be more than one lakh. We are waiting for the official data.”  He further said that the NRC was not on the expected lines.

BGP leader Nanda Kirati Dewan said, “The Gorkha community is an integral part of the greater Assamese community. People of the community have shown patience throughout the NRC updation process.”

National Working President of the body, Munish Tamang said, “Following BGP’s intervention names of individual with minor mismatch have been included in the final draft. President of Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha President Durga Khatiwada’s name along with that of his 3 children have been included but sadly grand freedom fighter and founding member of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, Chabilal Upadhyay’s granddaughter, Smt. Manju Devi’s name has been left out along with that of her 2 children despite several presentations that her ‘D’ is marked arbitarily without any case reference in FT or with Border Police.”

The final NRC was officially released on August 31st, 2019. It was started in 2013 as per the order of the Supreme Court. The apex court has been monitoring the whole NRC updation procedure since then. A total of 3,11,21,004 persons found eligible for inclusion in the final list while 19,06,657 were found ineligible. It may be mentioned that over 40 lakh people were excluded from the final draft NRC that was published in 2018.
