Guwahati, February 20: According to reports, over 3000 rape cases and around 2000 cases of violence have been reported against women in Assam. The matter of crime against women has been raised in the ongoing Assembly Session on Monday where the official records revealed that 3, 009 rape cases were reported in the State since 2016.
The opposition raises a question regarding the rate of crime against women after the advent of BJP government in the State. As per official reports, around 1, 552 rape cases were registered in the year 2016-17 and during the same time about nine women were killed after rape.
Official reports further disclose that out of around 3, 009 rape cases only 1,786 convicts have been arrested and out of them, chargesheet have been filed only against 1, 697 persons.
Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary while replying on behalf Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has said State government has introduced several measures for the safety and protection of women like five ‘One Step Centres’, Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) in local languages were provided where affected women can immediately call for help. Other than this, Patowary stated that the BJP government in the State will further initiate women-specific services like medical aid, legal aid, psycho-social counseling, a temporary support system to women, police assistance and several other services.
According to the data released by National Crimes Records Bureau, Assam ranks second in the list of All India Crime rate against women in 2016.
