Over 54 lakh hit by flood in Assam, death toll rises to 100

Guwahati: At least 12 people have died in floods and landslides in the past 24 hours, the death toll has risen to 100, said Assam State Disaster Management Authority.

Over 54 lakh people across 32 districts have so far been affected in the state as the flood situation worsened.

Rivers Brahmaputra, Kopili and Disang along with their tributaries are flowing above danger level, officials said.

Barpeta, Morigaon and Nagaon have been severely affected, said official.

Meanwhile, Eleven animals of Kaziranga National Park have died too. Ten of the wild animals, including a leopard, were run over by vehicles while trying to escape from the partially-flooded park.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Wednesday visited some affected areas, said the state government would take all possible measures to mitigate the damage caused by the floods.
