Over Rs 7 Crore Cash Seized In Northeast Since Announcement Of General Elections

Around Rs 7.33 crore cash has been seized by the Income Tax Department from the Northeastern(NE) states after the announcement of the general elections and since the model code of conduct came into force on March 10th 2019.

As per the IT officials, the seizure of unexplained cash ahead of the 2019 elections exceed by Rs. 1.21 crore cash seized during the 2014 general elections. Around 75 seizures were made in the past two weeks.

Ahead of the second phase of the general elections, the department has given strict orders to tighten the election expenditure monitoring process in the region.

As many as 12 Air Intelligence Units (AIU), deployed in the region will remain active till the third phase of elections April 23rd, the last poll date in the region.

The AIU is also monitoring unscheduled and chartered private flights at all airports, they are asked to alert the IT about all helicopter landings.
