Panchayat election: Uproar at polling booth leads to blank fire, lathi charge in Tezpur

Tezpur, November 6: Uproar in Thelamara Lower Primary School against alleged rigging led to blank fire and lathi charge on Wednesday.

The polling booth falls under Dhekiajuli Legislative Constituency.

Ankush Dey, son of BJP’s presidential candidate for the Thelamara Village Panchayat Lakhirani Dey, allegedly involved in rigging inside the polling booth on Wednesday night.

Locals, after getting the cognizance of his presence inside the closed polling booth with the presiding officer Rajib Borthakur after completion of the polling, reached the spot and nabbed him and created uproar in the area.

Irate people threw stone at the house of Lakshmirani Dey.

Later, police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel reached the spot and charged lathi and fired blank.

At least three people were severely injured in lathi charge.

An FIR has been lodged against Ankush Dey.

Meanwhile, Lakshmirani Dey denied involvement of her son in rigging.

Nobody has been detained so far.

Further investigation is on.
