Agartala, September 12: In a major development, the Tripura’s ruling ally Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) on Wednesday demanded the State Election Commission to reschedule bye-election in three-tier panchayat bodies.
The move came after a clashed broke out between members of the ruling IPFT and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday on the last day of filing nominations for the panchayat elections in Tripura.
“At least 15 members of the BJP and IPFT were injured in the intra-party clashes and subsequent police lathi-charge at Boxanagar late Monday evening. The clashes broke out when IPFT members went to file nomination papers. Due to the clash, the IPFT could not submit their nomination papers within the official time,” a police official said.
The IPFT on Wednesday alleged that the BJP didn’t want the indigenous party to grow stronger.
The IPFT could not submit their nomination papers in 10 out of 35 rural development blocks of Tripura. Over 20 persons were injured in clashes.
