The Assam unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged the members of the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Maoists were actively involved in the violent incidents that took place in the state during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests last month.
Addressing a press meet in Guwahati on January 2nd, 2020, Assam BJP unit president Ranjeet Kumar Dass claimed that Maoists in the name of Akhil Gogoi-led Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) had burnt the house of BJP MLA Binod Hazarika at Chabua in Tinsukia district of Assam. Chabua is also the hometown of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Dass said that the PFI is trying to start communal riots in the state.
PFI Assam unit president Aminul Hoque and press secretary Mohammad Muzammil Hoque have already been arrested in connection with anti-CAA violence in Guwahati.
On the other hand, Gogoi has been sent to 14-day judicial custody. He was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for his alleged link with the Maoists.
After the Rajya Sabha passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on December 11th, 2019, massive protests erupted in the state. Several vehicles and other public properties have been either set ablaze or ransacked by the anti-CAA protesters.
Four people have been killed in police firing, while an oil tanker driver was charred to death when his vehicle was set on fire in Orang.
