After the photographs of Congress president Rahul Gandhi with the leaders of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) and Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill flooded the social media platforms, Assam’s BJP leader and Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) chairman Jayanta Malla Baruah on February 5th, 2019 accused a “former Congress minister” of “funding” the local organisations in Assam.

A delegation of Congress, KMSS, AASU, NESO and Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill-led by Marxist literary critic and social scientist Hiren Gohain met Congress president on February 4th, 2019 in New Delhi and pressed him to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter on February 4th, 2019, Malla said, “While addressing a presser three months back, I had said that a former Congress minister is funding the local organisations. The local organisations have become a victim of Congress’ conspiracy and are creating a situation of unrest in Assam. It’s a pre-planned attempt by the Congress against the BJP.”

Though he didn’t mention the name of the former Congress minister, Baruah shared a photograph where Gandhi is seen sharing the frame with former Assam education minister and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora, leader of Congress legislature party Debabrata Saikia, former chief minister of Uttarakhand and Congress in-charge of Assam, Harish Rawat along with Gogoi.
