PM lauded the Assam government for burning around 2,500 rhino horns

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Assam government on Thursday for burning 2,500 rhino horns at Bokakhat and promised that actions would be made to protect India’s one-horned rhinos.

Taking to the twitter, PM Modi wrote, “Commendable effort by Team Assam. The One-Horned Rhino is India’s pride and all steps will be taken for its well-being.”

Meanwhile, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also reacts on Modi’s tweet and wrote, “Thank you Adarniya Pradhan Mantri ji for your continued guidance and support. Under your leadership, we will leave no stone unturned to protect and preserve our Pashu , Pakshi and Prakriti.”

Assam is home to the world’s largest population of greater one-horned rhinos.

On the occasion of World Rhino Day, the Assam government burned nearly 2,500 rhino horns on Wednesday to dispel myths.

The state government has agreed to burn 2,479 rhino horns, with 94 being kept for academic purposes.

In addition to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Kaziranga, Manas and Orang National Parks have around 2,600 individual rhinos.

The Chief Minister stated that starting October 1, the Kaziranga National Park will be open to tourists and visitors, as the State Government works towards totally removing COVID restrictions and restoring normal economic activity.
