Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti adviser Akhil Gogoi on March 11th, 2019 gheraoed the Panchayat and Rural Development (P&RD) head office at Panjabari in Guwahati and demanded to quash of the appointments of the candidates who were selected in the permanent post in the department. Gogoi also asked the government to conduct re-examination for the appointment of fresh candidates.

“Majority of the selected workers are relatives of BJP-RSS workers. The appointments should be cancelled with immediate effect. A fresh examination should be conducted,” said Gogoi. The peasant leader also got into a heated argument with police personnel deployed at the office premises.

“This (P&RD irregularities) is one of the biggest scams in the history of Assam. The Sonowal-led government is scared to hand over the case to CBI as the masks of many BJP leaders will fall off,” he added.

The combined competitive examination was held on May 20th, 2018. According to a complaint registered by a joint director of the department with the CID, mobile phones were used unauthorisedly inside the examination halls. A tentative CID report dated February 7th, 2019 noted that anomalies occurred in 18 centres.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on March 8th, 2019 directed institution of a one-man inquiry by Additional Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah to inquire into the whole episode and submit a report to the government at the earliest. The Congress and the All Assam Students’ Union demanded high-level judicial inquiries into the matter.
