The Sub-Inspector (SI) and Constable of Burha Police Outpost in Assam’s Darrang district were suspended after three women including a two-month-old pregnant woman alleged they were stripped naked and beaten during interrogation at the station.

SI Mahendra Sarma and Constable Binita Boro have been placed under suspension on September 17th, 2019 as Darrang Superintendent of Police, Amrit Bhuyan ordered an inquiry into the matter.

As per information, Burha police picked up the trio from Guwahati for interrogation on September 9th, 2019, in connection with a case against a local youth, who had allegedly kidnapped a girl. The victims alleged that Sarma beat them “mercilessly” including in their private parts and threatened them with dire consequences if they try to register a case in the matter. They also alleged that a lady constable was also involved in the “inhume act”.

Bhuyan told newsmen that on September 6th, 2019, a youth registered a case (No 18/2019) against one Rasul Ali for allegedly kidnapping his sister. “Ali kept the victim at his elder sister Manowara Begum’s residence at Guwahati’s Six Mile area. But, the local police, who were contacted by Burha police seeking cooperation, failed to recover them when they visited the place. Thereafter, Begum, her husband and other two women were picked up for interrogation,” Bhuyan said.

The SP further informed that the accused Ali and the victim surrendered before the police on September 9th, 2019. “Ali was arrested and the victim was released after the due procedure,” Bhuyan added.

Speaking on the alleged ‘inhuman’ torture on Ali’s relatives, Bhuyan said, “We received a complaint in the matter on September 11th, 2019. An inquiry has been launched in the matter.”
