Guwahati: Cross-voting might have paved the way for a big win for NDA’s candidate Draupadi Murmu on Thursday.
According to reports, 17 MPs have cross-voted in support of Murmu. At the same time, 113 MLAs also did cross-voting.
Interestingly, Assam tops the list where as many as 22 opposition MLAs have cross-voted in support of Murmu.
Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter saying, “Smt Droupadi Murmu polled 104 votes compared to NDA’s original strength of 79 in the 126 member Assam Assembly. 2 absent. My heartfelt gratitude to the people of Assam for reposing their faith in the NDA’s Presidential candidate & wholeheartedly joining this historic moment.”
It may be noted that the NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu emerged victorious after the third round of counting of votes on Thursday.
Draupadi Murmu bagged 2161 votes in all three rounds and its value is 577777.
The tribal leader from the eastern state of Odisha will be the 15th president of the Republic of India.
Murmu will take the oath of office on July 25, a day after President Ram Nath Kovind’s tenure ends.
On the other hand, Yashwant Sinha, the candidate of the opposition parties, got 1058 votes and its value is 261062.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Murmu on his victory. He said that India has written history with the election of a daughter of a tribal community as the President. He said that Draupadi Murmu’s life, an example set, and her success will inspire every Indian, she has emerged as a ray of hope for the citizens.
