Principal faces ire over student’s suicide in Dhakuakhana

Guwahati, September 14: The Principal of Dhakuakhana College, Lakhimpur faced the wrath of the students after a fellow student committed suicide.

The protesting students alleged that Dulen Chutia committed suicide after principal Dr Jugananda Sutradhar assaulted and humiliated him. Dulen was a first year Higher Secondary student in the college.

The students of the college and friends of the deceased alleged that Dulen took the drastic step after Sutradhar scolded him infront of other teachers for reportedly teasing a girl from the same college.

“Dulen’s identity card was snatched away by the principal. His parents were called in by the Principal. He was shamed infront of all. Unable to bear the pain and shame, he committed suicide on Wednesday at his rent house. The Principal is solely responsible for the suicide,” said a student.

Demanding justice for Dulen, the students came out in large numbers to protest against the Principal. When police tried to disperse the protesting students, they burnt tyres and pelted stones at the police vans. The students also gheraoed Dhakuakhana Police Station.

Later, the police had to resort to tear gas, rubber bullets and lathi-charge to bring the situation under control.

Speaking to TIME8, Arindam Baruah, Sub-Divisional Officer, Dhakuakhana said, “Presently, the situation is under our control. Investigations are going on.”

Meanwhile, the students’ union has registered an FIR in the Dhakuakhana Police Station against Sutradhar and professor Khaninda Dutta alleging physical and mental torture to Dulen.
