Pugilist Lovlina Borgohain becomes first Assamese woman to qualify for Tokyo Olympics
Guwahati: It’s a proud moment for the state, as Assam’s Lovlina Borgohain becomes the first woman pugilist from the State to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics tournament scheduled to be held this year.
Notably, the Tokyo Olympics had been postponed for a year to the Covid-19 pandemic, which is now scheduled for late July and early August this year.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his official Twitter handle saying, “A matter of great joy and pride for us as @LovlinaBorgohai becomes the first woman pugilist from Assam to qualify for the #Olympics. My heartiest Congratulations to you Lovlina. You have our finest wishes for the big moment. May you continue to shine and succeed.”
State BJP president and cabinet minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass took to his official twitter handle and lauded her for the achievement. “We are ecstatic and proud that @LovlinaBorgohai has qualified for the #Olympics as the first woman pugilist from Assam. Lovlina, my heartiest congratulations. We send you our best wishes for the momentous day. May you continue to shine and achieve your goals.”
Also, state Cabinet minister Ashok Singhal tweeted, “It’s really big for our land and for us. Assam is proud of @LovlinaBorgohai as she becomes the first woman pugilist from our state to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics 2021. I wholeheartedly congratulate Lovlina. Jai Aai Axom, Jai Hind.”
It may also be mentioned that earlier this month, pugilist Lovlina had settled for bronze in the 69kg category at the Asian Boxing Championship 2021 held in Dubai.
