In a shocking incident, a mob, largely comprising women, lynched a forty-five-year-old quack in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district. Hussain Ali, a resident of Raikata Sandanpur in Hojai district, was accused of raping a 22-year-old woman and her 16-year-old relative on the pretext of conducting a puja ritual.

As per information available, on July 3rd, 2019, Hussain visited the house where the two women lived to “cure and heal” the blindness of a third woman living with them. After the rituals were completed, Hussain allegedly said that a separate ritual has to be carried out on the 22-year-old woman. He allegedly demanded that she has to be alone in the room with him during the puja.

According to the allegations, he raped the woman inside the room and also threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone. The woman later shared her ordeal with her one of her aunts. Next day, Hussain visited the house again and said that he would conduct a puja on the 16-year-old girl.

The woman’s family claimed that when he was in the room with the girl, the 22-year-old woman called to ask whether he had come. When she was told that Hussain was in the room with the girl, the woman along with her aunt rushed to the house.

When the news spread, Ali was beaten to death by an angry mob in Sitoi Adong village in West Karbi Anglong district on July 4th, 2019.  After being intimated by the village chief, the police rushed to the spot immediately and took the man to the hospital but he succumbed of his injuries.

West Karbi Anglong police chief Mrinal Talukdar told media that two cases, one for the murder of the accused and the second, regarding the alleged rapes have been registered. The quack was a known face in the area. Locals alleged that there were previous allegations against Hussain of sexual advances.

“We have filed FIR against unknown persons who lynched this man to death. We are investigating and hope to nab the culprits soon,” Talukdar told NDTV. He further informed that since one of the girls is a minor, a case has been filed under POSCO act as well.

On June 8th, 2018, two Assam youths – Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath – were beaten to death by a group of irate villagers Panjuri under Dokmoka Police Station in Karbi Anglong district over suspicion of being a child-lifters.
