A few of the top party leaders claimed that party president’s relentless ‘Chowkidar chor hai’ campaign against Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “negative” in its tone which resulted into the humiliating defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.

In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress won just 52 seats in the 542-member lower house. On the other hand, the BJP-led NDA won a record 303 seats out of 542.

On May 23rd, 2019, Rahul congratulating Modi for his spectacular re-election asked him to “take care of the interests of the country”. Emphasizing that the Congress vs BJP is a contest of principles and ideologies, he told reporters on May 23rd, 2019, “Janata maalik hai. I respect people’s decision. My party’s fight against the BJP was ideological and it will continue.”
