Guwahati, February 4, 2019
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary Ram Madhab on February 3th, 2019 confirmed that the saffron party will bring the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill as supplementary in the Rajya Sabha on February 12th, 2019.
Anticipating the BJP’s move, the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), an umbrella organization of the students’ bodies of the Northeastern states, the congregation of 70 organizations spearheaded by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and a delegation led by intellectual Hiren Gohain called on the Congress president Rahul Gandhi seeking appropriate action of the party in the Rajya Sabha.
The Marxist literary critic and social scientist Hiren Gohain on February 4th, 2019 said that the Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill (FACAAB) tabled the concern of the people of Assam over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill issue before the Congress president Rahul Gandhi and urged him to take appropriate initiative to ‘prevent’ the bill.
All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) chief advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, “We met Congress president here today to express our demand to scrap the contentious bill and urged the Congress to take an appropriate action to prevent the bill from its passage in the Rajya Sabha. The bill will jeopardize the existence of the indigenous people of the entire Northeast region and nullify the essence of the hard-earned Assam Accord, 1985 and the basic tenets of the Indian Constitution.”
