Range Officer Responsible for Saturday’s Rhino Killing in Biswanath: Forest Minister

Guwahati, February 13: After the carcass of a dehorned adult rhino was found at Kaziranga’s Northern Range at Biswanath Chariali on Sunday, showing serious concern over the issue, Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma held the range officer responsible for such poaching activities in the area.

It is to be noted a male rhino was killed by poachers at Polokata Tapu in the Sixth Addition of the Kaziranga National Park in Biswanath district on Saturday midnight following which an irate Forest Minister rushed to the locations and stated that the ranger Pranjal Baruah should be held responsible for it. She directed the senior forest officials to take immediate actions on him.

The minister further talking about the concrete posts that the locals put up for grazing their cattle of the Northern Range in Polokota Tapu area order for removal of these posts within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, responding to the orders of the minister, forest officials have set ablaze 3-4 such posts and the eviction drive is underway. Reacting to the rhino killing, Biswanath Chariali district Students Union strongly condemned the forest department’s recklessness shouting slogans and burning effigies of the Forest Minister.

Also, a huge protest was jointly carried out by SMSS and KMSS in Borgang on Monday which witnessed a huge number of supporters coming out to the streets, shouting slogans and burning effigies of the range officer, Pranjal Baruah.

Putting allegations on the ruling BJP government, the organizations have stated that poaching activities are going on in a full-fledged manner in Sonitpur’s forest range under the supervision of Pranjal Baruah.

The student organizations have appealed the present government to take necessary actions to stop poaching and killing of the one-horned rhino and save the pride of Assam.
