    Rape accused lynched in Meghalaya

    The accused had allegedly raped a minor on August 5 while the matter came to light, on Saturday when the victim revealed about the incident to her parents

    Guwahati: A rape accused in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district was allegedly lynched on Monday. The deceased, a daily-wager was killed by the victims’ father and three others, police said.

    Police sources said that the deceased accused as Harun Sheikh (42), a resident of Silkigre village had succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a local public healthcare centre.

    Sources added that the accused had allegedly raped a minor on August 5 while the matter came to light, on Saturday when the victim revealed the incident to her parents.

    Later the angry father along with some of his friends confronted Sheikh and thrashed him.

    Police in Meghalaya have registered two separate cases and arrested four persons including the father of the victim. While a murder case was registered against the four, a case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 was also registered.

    Security has been beefed up in the area to prevent any untoward incident.
