Rape Cases Rising in Assam: Over 9000 cases registered since 2015

On Friday also, one woman from Musalpur area in Baksa district was allegedly raped by one Prashanta Rabha

GUWAHATI: The tall claims to Assam Police in dealing with crimes against women in the state fell flat as Assam recorded over 9000 rape cases since 2015.

As per the state police’s official statistics, the incidents of rape in the state have shown a rising trend since 2018.

The records said, “In 2015, there were some 1852 incidents of rape registered in Assam followed by 1779 in 2016 and 1708 in 2017. Then in 2018, the state police registered at least 1909 rape incidents. The numbers shot up to 1952 in 2019.”

On Friday also, one woman from Musalpur area in Baksa district was allegedly raped by one Prashanta Rabha. The accused allegedly broke into the residence of the woman on Thursday night and committed the crime. The victim claimed that she alone at her residence. Baksa police have already nabbed the accused.

This was the second incident of rape in Baksa district during the last one week. On last Sunday also, one teenager girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Baksa district’s Sonapur area. She was raped and murdered while her parents were out for the day. Police suspected that she was possibly killed with some sharp weapons.

State police sources, however, attributed the growth in the numbers of rape incidents with the high numbers of reporting of cases during the period. “In current times, women are conscious about their rights and don’t hesitate to register their complaints,” police sources said.
