    Region: Two held in Meghalaya for killing Sambar Deer

    The sambar deer is listed as a vulnerable species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List since 2008

    Guwahati: Two people were arrested in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district for killing an endangered sambar deer, police sources said. Meghalaya Police and the Wildlife Department nabbed the duo on August 3.

    The sambar deer is listed as a vulnerable species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List since 2008.

    Wildlife authorities and police were on the lookout for the duo after they were caught on camera hunting the deer near Baladinggre village in the Nokrek Biosphere under West Garo Hills district.

    A rifle used in the killing of the deer was also seized from the duo. They were sent to 14-days judicial custody by a court on Tuesday.

    Police said that they would also register a case under the arms act have been initiated against the two persons.
