Guwahati: Three TV channels, including Republic TV, are being probed on charges of Television Rating Points (TRP) manipulation, Mumbai Police revealed on Thursday.
Speaking to media, Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh said that Republic TV, headed by Arnab Goswami, and two other TV channels – Fakt Marathi and Box Cinema – are under scrutiny for manipulating ratings.
The ratings scam emerged during a larger analysis of the manipulation of news trends and how a “false narrative” was being spread, especially in connection with the probe into actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.
Giving details of the racket, Singh said that an organisation named ‘Hansa’ was helping these channels in trying to manipulate the TRPs.
In Mumbai, 2,000 barometers were installed to monitor ratings and BARC hired ‘Hansa’ to monitor these.
The media organisations allegedly bribed the households being metered to keep their channel switched on all the time even if they were not watching it.
According to Mumbai Police, each household would receive Rs 400-500 per month as part of the racket.
The Detection Crime Branch has busted a major racket which is fraudulently in involved in manipulating Television Rating Points (TRP) in Maharashtra. Two persons are arrested in this regard.
On a complaint, the Crime Branch nabbed a person from Malad. In the preliminary enquiry he revealed that he had been working for a company which is a part of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC).
