Guwahati: Expressing strong displeasure over the COVID-related standard operating procedure (SOP), the members of Sodou Assam Bihu Sanmilani Samanway Rakhi Samittee appealed before the State Government to either revoke the SOP or call off the Bihu programmes in the state.
The Bihu organizing committees during a protest at the Latasil playground here in Guwahati on Sunday have alleged that the Government is trying to impose the burden of the COVID protocol management to the Bihu committees through the SOP.
Speaking to TIME8 in this regard, Sodou Assam Bihu Sanmilani Samanway Rakhi Samittee general secretary Pranab Goswami said, “Almost heading towards completion of 80% of the work, the state government had issued an SOP with certain guidelines which are practically impossible for Bihu organizers to pursue due to time restraint. Hence, we appeal the Government to repeal the SOP or else cancel the Bihu functions like previous year.”
“Whether we will organize Bihu functions, or shall engage ourselves in COVID tests at the MMCH and GMCH?” questioned Goswami.
The Bihu organizing committees also claimed that going for COVID tests three days prior to the event is utterly impossible at this hour.
Challenging the state government, the members of the Bihu committees urged the government departments to take the responsibility of administrating the SOP at the Bihu events by deploying its men and machinery.
“We don’t have any issue, if the government takes the responsibility of the implementation of the SOP at the event, we are ok with it. But, instead, they are trying to shift the burden on the committee members,” said Goswami.
A number of Bihu committee members also alleged that government and political parties are making the Bihu committees as scapegoats to conduct Bihu functions in the state. “There was no SOP issued during the election campaigning/rallies with tens and thousands of people, then why now?” one of the members questioned.
Meanwhile, Assam Government’s directive was supported by vocalists Zubin Garg and Angaraag Papon Mahanta. However, some other artists have opposed it.
