Guwahati: A 3-4 days old rhino baby was rescued by forest guards of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) on Sunday morning. The cub was reportedly wondering in the jungle by itself and believed to have lost its mother amidst the flood.
The rhino cub was immediately taken to the nearby Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) centre for further observation, said KNP authority.
A search operation was also launched to find its mother and to reunite it with the family.
Flood has taken a toll on KNP this year with three continuous waves. Over 95 percent of the park area went inundated. However, with no rain and floodwater receding, animals have been returning back to the forest area. Still, 50 percent of the park area remained inundated.
According to the KNP authority statistics, this year alone, at least 147 animals including 105 hog deer and 16 rhinos have died during the flood. Out of them, four rhinos died naturally while the others drowned in floodwater.
Since the floodwaters started to enter the parka area and as the animals were heading towards the highlands and hills of Karbi Anglong district’s side, the rescue operation was also launched by the park authority.
“At least 170 animals were rescued including three rhinos, 120 hog deer and 30 pythons. Four tigers and four king cobras were also rescued during the flood by the forest department,” the park official stats said.
