Rhino Carcass Exhumed In Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary, Illegal Fishing Suspected Behind Its Killing

    Guwahati, June 26, 2019

Sensation gripped the Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary located in Nagaon district after the carcass of a rhino was exhumed from the ground at the Polashtoli camp inside the sanctuary on June 24th, 2019. The incident has sparked out stark revelations of the alleged involvement of forest officials in killing the rhino to ensure illegal trade of fishing and leasing out of water bodies.

As per reports, the female rhino had strayed out from the Orang National Park in the year 2017 and it had been staying in and around Laokhowa before suddenly disappearing in a mysterious way in the month of September 2017.

After the recovery of the carcass, forest officials claimed that it was killed by poachers and later buried in the ground but according to sources, forest officials might be involved in the killing of the rhino. An investigation has been initiated by the Kaziranga National Park.

According to reports, water bodies located in and around Laokhowa range are illegally leased out for fishing and if a rhino comes and stays near a water body then it can’t be leased out which affects the whole practice of illegal leasing of water bodies.  Currently, guards posted near the Polashtoli camp are being interrogated in connection with the case.
