Guwahati: A man who was accused of rhino poaching was shot at by police when he allegedly tried to escape from custody in Assam’s Biswanath district.

The injured criminal has been identified as Zagir Hussain alias Zakir Hussain.

He was arrested by the Biswanath Police from the Kaladuba area in Juria under the Nagaon district two days ago.

According to Biswanath Superintendent of police, Navin Singh, the said poacher was involved in rhino poaching activity at Kaziranga National Park earlier this year.

The police informed that Zakir Hussain is the associate of the deceased rhino poacher Nalkur.

On Sunday night, Zakir tried to escape from the police custody when he was being taken to reveal the place where he had hidden illegal weapons. Zakir was shot in his leg after he allegedly attacked on-duty police personnel.

The injured poacher has been admitted to the Tezpur Medical College and Hospital (TMCH) for further treatment. Meanwhile, the injured police constable namely Ismail Ali was being treated at a hospital.
