The Special Rhino Protection Force (SPRF), which was formed in 2018 to empower the forest department to protect the pride of Assam ‘one-horned rhinoceros’, is all set to foil the poacher’s attempt.
On July 11th, 2018, the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had appointed 90 constables to form the SPRF. A total of 82 constables have been trained in the 9th Assam Police Battalion headquartered at Nagaon district.
As per the census held in March 2018, which was jointly conducted by the Assam Forest Department and some recognized wildlife NGOs, the rhino population in the national park is 2,413. The force will be exclusively used for Kaziranga National Park, Orang National Park and Manas National Park.
