Guwahati: Roing Police arrested one Raju Thakuria alias Raju Medhi, a person based at Dhola, for allegedly running a timber racket and suspected to be one of the kingpins of illegal timber trade in Arunachal Pradesh.
As per reports, the said person was arrested after laying down a trap. He was called to Roing on the pretext of releasing of his trucks which police had seized earlier and was arrested then.
Consequent upon his arrest, one pistol, 13 live rounds and Rs 2.5 lacs have been seized from his possession.
As per police, the arrested accused has revealed names of several other accomplices across various districts in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
The timber allegedly is obtained by feeling of tress in the reserve forests of Namsai and Tezu, while illegal permits are obtained from Pasighat and then the timber is transported to Assam to the depot of Raju Medhi using this fake permits from where it is sold all across the country.
