RPF seized drugs worth Rs 4 Cr in 2020; Rescued over a hundred

RPF has detected 56 cases of theft of railway property worth more than Rs.5.9 lakhs

GUWAHATI: The rampant use of railways for drugs smuggling and human trafficking from the region could be gauged with the fact that the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has seized narcotics and contraband items valued over Rs. 3.9 Cr and rescued over hundreds in 2020.

The figures were believed to be high in terms of a long halt in railway services in the country due to the nationwide lockdown.

Subhanan Chanda, chief public relations officer (CPRO) of NFR said, “During the year, at least 23 persons were also arrested in charges of carrying contraband items and were later handed over to appropriate authority along with drugs seized materials for legal actions as per law.”

In a recent case last week, the RPF train escort party succeeded to seize Ganja worth around Rs. One lakh from Agartala- New Delhi Special Rajdhani Exp.

The CPRO added, “RPF of NFR has also been in the forefront in rescuing the runaway, destitute / trafficked children in which 103 minor children were rescued with the arrest of 14 traffickers during 2020.”

Last year, RPF has also detected 56 cases of theft of railway property with the recovery of stolen railway property worth more than Rs.5.9 lakhs and the arrest of 125 persons.
