Rs 5 Lakh Seized In Guwahati Ahead of Lok Sabha Election

Guwahati, April 4, 2019

Just ahead of the 17th Lok Sabha Election, the flying squad of the Assam Police on April 4th, 2019 seized Rs five lakh from a person’s vehicle at Pandu in Guwahati, the gateway to the Northeast region of the country. The accused Ayaz Ali could not produce any valid documents supporting the amount of money, police said.

It may be mentioned that Assam will go for polling in three phases – April 11th, 18th and 23rd, 2019 and the election result will be declared on May 23rd, 2019.

At least Rs 1.96 crore in cash in various interceptions including at airports were seized across the Northeast region since the Modal Code of Conduct (MCC) came into effect on March 10th, 2019.

The Income Tax department on Wednesday informed that they have detected hundreds of suspicious depositions and transactions in banks, in the past few days across the Northeast and that inquiries have been initiated in about 200 cases so far.

The Income Tax Principal Director (Investigation) Sanjay Bahadur in a press conference said that over 150 officials have been deployed across the Northeast to monitor 112 districts and 12 airports.

As per the official banks are being used as safe conduits to hide and move suspicious cash, which came into light after procuring 10 days’ data from five major banks.
