New saffron face and a former Congress MP Bhubaneswar Kalita and senior journalist Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, a combined candidate of Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), filed their nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections on March 13th, 2020.

Kalita was accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state BJP president Ranjeet Dass along with other MLAs.

Kalita, who quit Congress on August 5th, 2019, opposing the party’s stand towards national interest, joined the saffron party on August 9th, 2019.

The Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF), an ally of the saffron party, nominated former Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary again. On the other hand, the Congress and the AIUDF nominated Ajit Kumar Bhuyan as a common candidate since Congress does not have sufficient numbers in the parliament to contest the election alone.

The elections for the will be held for three seats in Assam. The term of two Congress MPs – who switched to the BJP – whose term will end on April 9th, 2020, include Bhubaneswar Kalita and Sanjay Singh. Biswajit Daimary will also retire on the same day.

The elections will be held for 55 seats from 17 states. The last date of filing of nominations would be March 13th, 2020 and polling would be on March 26th, 2020, from 9 am to 4 pm.
