    SC Directs Assam Govt To Report On B’deshi Migrants In Detention Centres

    The apex court in May 2019 had ordered that the detainees who have completed three years in the detention centres will be set free on conditions

    The Supreme Court on February 14th, 2020 directed the Centre and the Assam government to file a fresh report on the status of release of Bangladeshi migrants in detention centres.

    The apex court in May 2019 had ordered that the detainees who have completed three years in the detention centres will be set free on conditions which include – a verifiable address, payment of Rs 1 lakh each, submission of biometric information and they need to report to a local police station every week.

    Advocate Prashant Bhushan apprised the bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde. Advocate Bhushan stated that over 300 people were in detention for over three years, while more than 700 had been detained for over one year.

    The apex court will again take up the matter for hearing in the third week of March.

    Last year, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai had informed the Rajya Sabha that at present there are 317 inmates are in Tezpur detention centre, 142 in Kokrajhar, 222 in Goalpara, 195 in Jorhat, 72 in Silchar and 40 in Dibrugarh.

    Rai also informed that as on November 22nd, 2019, 988 “foreigners” have been lodged in six detention centres in Assam.
